The Best Chicken Fried Steak
Ingredients:
For the Chicken Fried Steak:
4 cube steaks (about 4-6 oz each)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Country Gravy:
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
Salt and black pepper (to taste)
Instructions:
For the Chicken Fried Steak:
Prepare the Coating:
In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
Bread the Steaks:
Dip each cube steak in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip into the buttermilk-egg mixture, letting any excess drip off.
Dip the steak back into the seasoned flour, pressing it down to ensure it is well coated. Place the breaded steaks on a baking sheet.
Fry the Steaks:
Heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the breaded steaks, cooking 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Transfer the cooked steaks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
For the Country Gravy:
Make the Gravy:
Drain the excess oil from the skillet, leaving about 2-3 tablespoons and any crispy bits in the skillet.
Stir in the flour, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden and fragrant. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Serve:
Serve the chicken fried steaks warm, topped generously with the country gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes or biscuits for the ultimate comfort meal.
