Meet Anna Faris’ 12-Years-Old Son Whose Brain Bled After Birth – His Story

A surprise diagnosis, a cross-family friendship, and a mother-son tradition built on imagination — Anna Faris has spoken openly about all three. Her son Jack, now 12, has remained at the center of it all. His story began in an intensive care unit.

The birth of Anna Faris and Chris Pratt’s son in 2012 was followed by a diagnosis that left both parents in shock. For weeks, they faced difficult updates and long stretches in the hospital. What followed was a series of milestones that unfolded more slowly than most.

Now 12, Jack’s story is no longer defined by that beginning. But the impact of those early days still lingers in the way Faris and Pratt have chosen to raise him. Both have spoken publicly in recent years, offering rare insight into the life they’ve built around their son.

Early Days: From On-Set Chemistry to Starting a Family

Faris and Pratt first met in 2007 while filming the romantic comedy “Take Me Home Tonight.” Their connection was instant, fueled by a shared sense of humor and an unusual mutual interest: collecting insects.

Faris had just finalized her divorce from actor Ben Indra, whom she had been married to from 2004 to 2008. Faris and Pratt married in 2009. In interviews, Pratt described their decision to start a family as one that felt natural to them both.

“I don’t think one of us wanted it any more than the other,” he revealed. “She would say, ‘How do you feel about that?’ and I would say, ‘I’ve been kind of thinking about that too! I think that’d be cool.” Three years later, they were expecting their first child. However, nothing about Jack’s arrival would go as planned.

In August 2012, Faris was seven months pregnant when her water broke unexpectedly in the middle of the night. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors were able to halt active labor using magnesium sulfate.

The goal was to keep her on bed rest for four weeks to give the baby more time to develop. But just seven days later, labor resumed. Faris later recalled being in denial about what was happening. “For hours I was like, ‘I’m just having indigestion,'” she narrated in 2015.

Both she and Pratt were frightened, unsure of what the early delivery would mean for their child. Jack was born nine weeks premature. Though he appeared stable at birth, doctors quickly discovered a complication that would define the weeks to come.

NICU Crisis: ‘Severe Brain Bleeding’

Shortly after Jack’s birth, doctors informed the new parents that their son had suffered a serious medical complication. He was diagnosed with severe brain bleeding, a condition that raised immediate concerns about his development.

The newborn was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, where he would remain for the next month. In her memoir “Unqualified,” Faris recalled the moment she and Pratt were pulled aside by the pediatric neurosurgeon.

“There was a chance that he could be developmentally disabled,” she reportedly wrote. The uncertainty was overwhelming, but the couple remained united. “So Chris and I did what we could, which was hold hands and hope and face it together,” she added.

Doctors told them it would take time — up to 18 months — before they could know whether Jack would have lasting effects. As they waited, the hospital became their new home.

Pratt later described the experience as deeply emotional. “We were scared for a long time,” he recalled. He said they turned to prayer and leaned on each other and their support system. “It restored my faith in God,” he added. “Not that it needed to be restored, but it really redefined it.”

Faris, meanwhile, focused on staying strong while managing the emotional weight of the unknown. “I have to be as strong as I possibly can,” she recalled thinking at the time. Despite how fragile Jack looked, both parents described seeing him as beautiful.

Pratt would later recall, “The baby was so beautiful to us, and I look back at the photos… it must have been jarring for other people to come in and see him, but to us he was so beautiful and perfect.” After weeks of medical monitoring and slow improvements, Faris and Pratt were finally able to take Jack home.

Jack’s Early Milestones and Minor Challenges

Jack was discharged from the hospital about a month after his birth. Though the initial prognosis had been uncertain, he began to grow and develop with only a few lingering issues. Over time, doctors noted slight challenges with his vision and leg muscles, but nothing that required major intervention.

By the time he was four months, Jack was in good health. Faris later described him as a happy and affectionate child. In “Unqualified,” she reportedly wrote, “Today, Jack is at a beautiful age. He has some temper tantrums occasionally,[..] but he’s a really good kid and he’s happy and delicious and likes cuddles.”

Pratt also spoke with pride about his son’s progress. “He is such a fighter, he’s amazing,” he gushed. “He’s so open and there’s no fear in him no matter what.” Though the early weeks were filled with medical briefings and emotional strain, Jack’s day-to-day life gradually became more ordinary and more joyful.

As he continued to grow, Faris and Pratt adjusted to parenthood while juggling their careers. Faris was starring in the CBS sitcom “Mom,” and in 2015, she opened up about the emotional toll of balancing work and motherhood. “Motherhood is like a big sleeping bag of guilt,” she said.

She also reflected on how Jack’s birth had changed their relationship and how it had affected Pratt personally. “It’s one of those things that drives you apart or makes you closer,” she said. “I think that being a father is very meaningful and rewarding to Chris. He’s a great dad.”

Despite their public visibility, both parents kept the details of Jack’s ongoing development largely private. But as he moved through his early childhood, their focus remained clear: creating a stable, loving environment around him.

Separation, a Focus on Co-Parenting, and Hopes for a Blended Family

In August 2017, after eight years of marriage, Faris and Pratt publicly announced their separation. They shared a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to Jack, who was five at the time.

“Our son has two parents who love him very much,” they wrote. “We want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.”

Their divorce was finalized the following year, but both actors remained actively involved in their son’s life. In 2019, Faris shared her hopes for maintaining a sense of unity between their households. She spoke about creating future traditions, such as celebrating holidays together and finding ways to stay connected as a family.

“Grudge-holding is not something that Chris and I do,” she said. Following their separation, both Faris and Pratt entered new relationships that eventually led to marriage. Faris began dating cinematographer Michael Barrett in 2017, and the couple eloped in July 2021.

Pratt married author Katherine Schwarzenegger in June 2019; they now share three children — daughters Lyla and Eloise, and a son, Ford. Over time, the dynamic between their two households became increasingly cooperative. In a 2022 interview, Faris said, “We’re all getting much closer, and I so appreciate that.”

She spoke highly of Schwarzenegger’s parenting approach, adding, “She’s just on top of it. I love how she is with Jack.” Though they hadn’t yet shared major holidays as a group, Faris remained hopeful about the possibility.

“We won’t have this Thanksgiving together, but I do hope that we can celebrate holidays,” she said. “And I do think we can.” As both families settled into new rhythms, Faris remained intentional about maintaining her connection with Jack.

Mother-Son Bond: Imaginative Games and Private Traditions

As Jack grew older, Faris found ways to nurture their bond through small rituals and shared play. In a July 2024 interview, she revealed that every six months, Jack gets to choose a special activity for just the two of them.

“Because we live in Los Angeles, sometimes it’ll be Disneyland. We haven’t conquered Universal Studios yet. But going up to the San Diego Zoo, that kind of thing,” she said. Their outings often include imaginary role-play, something Faris has kept up since Jack was little.

“I love to do boarding-school headmistress,” she shared. “I love playing those kinds of imaginary games with people in my life, which annoys some of them but doesn’t seem to annoy Jack too much yet. Unless we’re around other kids. Then he’s like, ‘Mom, stop it. Stop it.'”

Faris described the joy she gets from those moments, saying, “Getting delight in feeling rascally with him, feeling like a kid with him, is incredibly fun.” The private routines have remained a source of connection, even as Jack enters his teenage years.

Jack at 12: ‘Smart, Kind, and Tough’

In August 2024, Pratt marked Jack’s twelfth birthday with a photo and tribute shared on Instagram. The image showed father and son bottle-feeding a calf together, accompanied by a message that read, “Happy Birthday to my wonderful son Jack. I thank God every day for you, sweet boy. You are so smart, hilarious, kind, thoughtful, trustworthy, and tough.”

The post drew a wave of warm reactions from followers with comments like, “Wow… time flies” and “Awe… he does look like a sweet boy.” In a different post uploaded by Faris fans said things like “Omg he is your Mini-Me!” and “OMG! He’s grown up so much!”

As Jack nears adolescence, both Faris and Pratt continue to speak proudly of his growth — not only physically, but in character. Faris recently described him as “a solid anchor,” noting how grounded he is despite growing up in a public family.

“I feel so lucky,” she said in March 2025. “I don’t know how he got so down-to-earth, but I’m really grateful.” More than a decade after the complications surrounding his birth, Jack’s personality — and presence — now stand on their own.

A Steady Presence in a Time of Change

In January 2025, Faris was among the more than 80,000 people displaced by the Los Angeles wildfires. Her home in the Pacific Palisades was destroyed, though she and her family were unharmed.

Just a week later, she returned to work to film a commercial campaign for Scrubbing Bubbles — a project she said provided a much-needed distraction. “It was, and still kind of continues to be a little bit surreal, so I’m really grateful. It felt like they just had my back,” she said.

That same sense of grounding extended beyond her work. While speaking about her new comedy “Spa Weekend,” which she filmed with Isla Fisher and Leslie Mann, Faris described how important it felt to stay connected during uncertain times.

And in conversations about her day-to-day life, the 48-year-old actress often returned to the topic of Jack, describing his presence as calm, consistent, and centering.
