Masalva, 43 – best known for playing the role of Ramon Arellano Felix in the hit Netflix series Narcos: Mexico – is now in critical condition, according to his close friend and fellow actor Mario Morán.
In an emotional TikTok video posted Thursday, April 3, Morán shared the heartbreaking update.
“My brother is fighting for his life far away from home,” Morán, 32, said (translated from Spanish).
“He fell victim to a very aggressive virus,” he added, although the location of the incident has not been disclosed.
“This led him to an induced coma. As of today, his situation remains delicate.”
The news has sent shockwaves through fans and fellow actors alike, prompting a massive outpouring of support online.
To help cover mounting hospital costs in a foreign country, Morán also launched a GoFundMe campaign for Masalva, urging fans and the public to chip in.
“The medical costs are enormous, and in a country where everything is more difficult, any help, no matter how small, can make the difference in this very difficult moment,” Morán said.
“If you can contribute, we thank you with our entire hearts.”
The fundraiser, launched Monday, April 1, confirmed Masalva had contracted an “unknown bacteria” and was in “serious condition.”
On Thursday, an important update was added to the campaign page: “Manu remains in critical condition; the bacteria has already been detected. He’s on antibiotics, and we’re waiting for him to begin to improve.”

In a message shared on behalf of Masalva’s family, supporters were thanked for their continued generosity: “Many thanks to everyone who has donated so far; your generosity and support are crucial during this difficult time for Manuel and his loved ones,” the update read.
“We deeply appreciate the generosity of acquaintances, friends, and family.”
“Thank you for continuing to share this campaign on your social media so we can reach more people who can help. Together, we can make a huge difference for Manuel and provide him with the strength and support he needs to recover.”
As of Friday, April 4, the GoFundMe page has exceeded its original $50,000 goal — a powerful testament to the love and admiration fans have for the Mexican actor.
In addition to his breakout role in Narcos: Mexico, where he starred alongside Diego Luna and Michael Peña, Masalva’s resume includes work in the Netflix drama La Guzmán and the critically acclaimed Mexican series Tengo Que Morir Todas Las Noches.
His most recent appearance was in the 2024 short film Si El Humo No Da Señales.
He’s also slated to appear in two upcoming television projects — the miniseries Franklin and the action-thriller series The Gringo Hunters, according to IMDb.
