Flavorful Teriyaki Chicken with Homemade Sauce
Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
2 green onions, sliced (optional, for garnish)
For the Teriyaki Sauce:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
1/4 cup sake (or dry sherry)
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening, if needed)
Instructions:
Prepare the Teriyaki Sauce:
In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, sake, brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until the sauce has slightly thickened. If a thicker sauce is desired, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Cook the Chicken:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken thighs and cook for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until the chicken is cooked through and has a nice golden-brown color.
Brush the chicken with some of the prepared teriyaki sauce during the last few minutes of cooking.
Serve:
Slice the chicken and drizzle with additional teriyaki sauce. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve hot with steamed rice and vegetables.
